Fat Girl at Heart: You Poor Pore Thing!

This is I. Extreme close-up. All natural. No makeup, natural light, no filters or retouching (*gasp) and my best RBF (Resting Bitch Face). For the most part, I do alright in the skin department. I have sensitive skin that needs tender loving care. I battle with slight redness and blotchiness, but I am blessed to not have to buck up against dark circles, hyperpigmentation, or severe breakouts.

I take care of myself and believe that great skin starts with proper rest, hydration, and nutrition. As an actress and model, I never know when my next paycheck will come along and I do not like to spend money on facials or any other fancy spa treatments. I keep it simple and inexpensive by heading to my pantry for facial fabrications. I’ll share with you my favorite tips that will keep your pores perfect and your pocketbook plentiful.

1) Baking Soda

It is possible to have facial skin as soft as a baby’s butt by using baking soda as an exfoliant. It is brilliant! Mix about a ½ tablespoon of baking soda with a little bit of water to make a paste. Use this as you would any over-priced facial scrub and then rinse clean. Your skin will be amazingly soft and smooth. #ButtFace

2) Honey

If you are spending money on any type of moisturizing mask, stop ASAP! Spread some honey on your sweet mug. Honey is nature’s best moisturizer. In addition, it contains a natural bacteria fighter for stubborn pimples. Plus it is packed with antioxidants, which help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your face. Slather on a rich layer of honey and leave for at least 20 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water and you are in for a treat. Your skin will instantly look plumped and revitalized; I am always amazed with the results. #HoneyMug

3) Steam, Ice, and a Cold Blast

Whenever my skin is a bit puffy or dehydrated, I go for my own version of hydration therapy. If I have stayed up too late, over imbibed or eaten a sodium-laden dinner, guaranteed I will rise to what I like to call “E.T. Eyes.” I have found that the fastest remedy is to take ice straight to the puffy pockets. Cold? Yes. Effective? Most certainly. Rubbing ice around your eyes will get the job done, fast. When my face is looking parched and lackluster, a steam facial is the best pick me up. I love to use the Conair facial steamer. It’s quick to set up and easy to clean up. And on the daily, after a shower, if you give your face a quick cold-water blast, you will invigorate your skin and close your pores. Your face will glow! #IceIceBaby

4) Oats

For super satiny skin all over your bodacious bod, take an oat bath. You will need:

  • Plain, unflavored, (preferably whole-grain) oatmeal; finer oatmeal is best
  • Coffee filter
  • Rubber band

Place about ½ cup of oatmeal into the coffee filter and tie off with the rubber band to make a cute little oat pouch. Add the pouch to your hot, running bath water. Feel free to add some essential oils or epsom salts for relaxation or sore muscles. After a nice lengthy soak, your skin will be silky smooth and super moisturized. An oat bath is soothing for irritated, itchy, or sunburned skin. #SowYourWildOats

5) Coffee Grounds

Enjoy your morning brew, but don’t get rid of those grounds. For an exhilarating exfoliating experience for your body, keep your coffee grounds to slather on and scrub down with. It will get a little messy, but it’s worth it. Coffee makes for an excellent body scrub, just be sure to keep it below the neck. If cellulite is an issue, the caffeine can temporarily reduce the appearance of those detestable dimples. #BuzzedAndBuffed
